Dropbox is a place to put your files so they show up on every device you own.

You work across a phone, a laptop, and a desktop at home. You're tired of emailing files to yourself and hunting for the latest version. Dropbox solves that problem.

Save a file once. It's uploaded automatically, then kept in sync everywhere you're logged in, with no manual copying and no attachments.

Syncing

When you save a change, Dropbox notices and uploads just that change. It then pushes the change to every other device signed in to your account. You never have to save it to the cloud separately, because it already lives there.

Dropbox stores your files on its own servers. Any device with the app or a browser session open pulls down changes as they happen. Every copy reflects the same underlying file rather than a separate, disconnected version.

Sharing without attachments

Instead of attaching a file to an email, you send a link. Anyone with the link can view or download the file, and they don't need a Dropbox account of their own.

A shared link points to the file's location in Dropbox's storage rather than sending a copy of the file itself. On paid plans, that link can be password-protected, set to expire, or restricted to view-only.

Getting a file back after you've deleted or ruined it

Dropbox keeps a history of changes to your files, so an accidental delete or a bad overwrite isn't necessarily permanent.

The recovery window depends on your plan. It runs 30 days on Plus, 180 days on Standard, and 1 year on Advanced. That covers deleted files and earlier saved versions alike. The free Basic plan carries no stated recovery window.

How does the syncing work under the hood?

Dropbox describes its own sync as running on three techniques. They are delta sync, LAN sync, and streaming sync, listed together on its plan-comparison page as "best-in-class sync technology."

  • Delta sync uploads only the part of a file that changed, not the whole file again. Edit one paragraph of a long document, and only that edit travels.
  • LAN sync copies a file between two of your own devices over your local network. That skips a round trip to Dropbox's servers when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Streaming sync lets you start using a file before it has finished downloading.

Files sitting on Dropbox's servers use 256-bit AES encryption, and files in transit use SSL/TLS. The Advanced plan adds end-to-end encryption, a stronger and separate guarantee. There, the file is encrypted before it leaves your device, so Dropbox itself cannot read it.

Prices are billed yearly, in US dollars, as listed on Dropbox's own pricing page.

Standard adds team folders, admin controls, password-protected links, and branded shared links over Plus. Advanced adds single sign-on, end-to-end encryption, audit logs, and tiered admin roles over Standard.

Where did Dropbox come from, and is it trustworthy?

Dropbox was founded in 2007 by MIT students Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, with early funding from Y Combinator. Houston has said the idea came from repeatedly forgetting his USB flash drive.

In a 2011 TechCrunch interview, Houston said, "It is easy for me to explain the idea, it is actually really hard to do it." The core concept is simple, which is keeping files in sync everywhere. The hard engineering problem underneath is doing that reliably at scale, across every device and connection type.

Dropbox has drawn security and privacy criticism over the years, documented on its own Wikipedia page. Files at rest are encrypted with 256-bit AES, and data in transit uses SSL/TLS, per Dropbox's own plan-comparison page.
